Representatives of Presidential Administration, SBU and Foreign Ministry show results of probe into Mariupol shelling to foreign ambassadors

On the order of the Ukrainian President, Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine Valeriy Chaly, Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Chief Valentyn Nalyvaichenko and Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin met with ambassadors of foreign states accredited in Ukraine. The results of the SBU investigation and evidence of war crimes in Mariupol, classified as a terrorist attacks and crimes against humanity, were presented at the meeting, the press service of Ukrainian president has reported.

"The shelling of Mariupol is a shocking terrorist act, as well as the shelling of the bus near Volnovakha, the trolleybus in Donetsk and the downing of the MH17 aircraft. Abuse and torture of Ukrainian soldiers by the so-called DPR [Donetsk People's Republic] violate all civilized rules of treatment of war prisoners. These actions have put DPR in line with ISIL terrorists, who killed a Japanese citizen yesterday," Valeriy Chaly said. He also expressed his condolences over the murder to the Ambassador of Japan to Ukraine Shigeki Sumi.

Chaly praised the statements made by President of the European Council Donald Tusk, U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and other partners of Ukraine who condemned the actions of the terrorists.

"We also highly appreciate the statement of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission, which confirmed that Mariupol had been shelled from the territory controlled by DPR," he noted.

According to Chaly, if the Minsk agreements were observed by pro-Russian terrorists and Russia, the tragedy of the past week would never have happened.

In turn, Nalyvaichenko and SBU representatives submitted the details of the tragedy, the timeline of the events, video evidence, intelligence data, intercepted radio and telephone conversations of individuals who had been directly involved in planning, organizing and conducting missile attacks on the eastern district of Mariupol. The video with testimony of one of the perpetrators of the crime was shown as well.

"All these materials directly prove that the heavy armament and its personnel involved in the shelling of Mariupol belong to the Russian Federation," reads the statement by the president's press service.

The Foreign Minister of Ukraine stressed that "the given crime should be first of all looked at in terms of morals and classified as a crime against humanity".

"Those responsible for this dreadful crime must be brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague. We count on your support," Klimkin said. He also called for the DPR and LPR (the so-called Luhansk People's Republic) to be recognized as terrorist organizations.

Klimkin also presented Ukraine's initiatives in the international arena aimed at the peaceful settlement of the situation in the Donbas. Ukraine still insists on a political solution to the conflict, based on the Minsk agreements and the Minsk protocol, which were signed by Russia.

"Russia must be a part of the process; it must be a part of solution to the problem. On the other hand, we are willing to expand the format of negotiations and involve the United States in it. We also hope that the work of the trilateral contact group will continue, for it is important for exchange of the war prisoners," he noted.

Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Chaly, Chief of the Security Service of Ukraine Nalyvaichenko and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Klimkin agreed to maintain a constant dialogue with foreign diplomats in order to coordinate future efforts, and to properly inform the international community on developments in Donbas.
