Canada introduces new sanctions against Russia

The Canadian government will take further restrictive measures against Russia, reads a statement posted on the website of the Canadian government on December 19.

"Canada, along with its allies, is committed to putting pressure on the Russian economy with a view to pressing the Putin regime to cease undermining the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine," Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The document notes that the new Canadian export restrictions, which will be applied under Canada's Special Economic Measures Act, prohibit the export, sale, supply or shipment of a specified list of goods to Russia, or any person in Russia, for use deep water oil exploration and production, Arctic oil exploration and production; or shale oil exploration and production.

These restrictions will also prohibit the provision to Russia, or any person in Russia, financial, technical or other services related to the prohibited goods.

"These actions complement similar measures being undertaken by the European Union and the United States," reads the statement.

Canada also announced additional economic sanctions and travel bans against "20 Russian and Ukrainian individuals."
