Talks in Normandy format may follow contact group meeting in Minsk - Poroshenko

Negotiations in the Normandy format may follow an upcoming meeting of the trilateral contact group in Minsk, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says.

"An agreement has been achieved [during a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, and Russian President Vladimir Putin] that, following a meeting of the trilateral contact group, we will have another conversation in the Normandy format so as to ensure progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements," Poroshenko said at a press conference following negotiations with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski in Warsaw on Wednesday.

Poroshenko did not clarify whether he implied a meeting or a telephone conversation in the Normandy format.

Poroshenko insisted that there is a need for tangible progress and real steps toward the de-escalation of the crisis. "The only progress that we have had so far is that no Ukrainian soldiers have been killed on the contact line on Ukrainian territory for the sixth day. And I think this shows that, when they need it, the parties can ensure a ceasefire. We have to implement all the 12 clauses of the Minsk protocol today," he said.
