Rada to vote on cancellation of non-bloc status of Ukraine next plenary week - speaker

The Verkhovna Rada will vote on the cancellation of the non-bloc status of Ukraine next plenary week, Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Hroisman said.

"There is no doubt that this bill will be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada […] and the Rada will vote on it next plenary week," Hroisman told a briefing in Kyiv on Thursday.

Hroisman said most parliamentarians will support the bill cancelling the non-allied status of Ukraine.

Hroisman said three bills on the issue have been drawn up and they require broad debate in the parliamentary committees.

On November 27, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the non-bloc status has failed to provide guarantees to Ukraine.

"This position has led to bigger losses and therefore we have decided to go back to the policies of integration in the Euro-Atlantic security space," Poroshenko said.

Poroshenko said Ukraine is now deepening its cooperation with NATO, is working to ensure operative compatibility of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with the armies of the NATO countries, and is re-orienting to the NATO standards in the defense sector.
