Ukrainian president, Australian premier agree to cooperate in energy sector

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and visiting Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko have discussed a broad agenda, including possible cooperation in the energy sector, at their recent talks, the Ukrainian leader's press service has reported.

"We have agreed to launch cooperation in the energy sphere. In particular, we discussed the possibility of using Australian uranium at our nuclear power plants," Poroshenko said.

The two leaders also agreed that their governments would soon consider the issue of delivering coal extracted in Australia to Ukraine.

Abbott, for his part, said that energy security was important for Ukraine and it was a good opportunity both for Australia and Ukraine.

Other topics on the meeting's agenda included coordination in multilateral formats, including within the United Nations.

Poroshenko thanked Australia for contributing $100 million to the International Monetary Fund to support Ukraine and for assisting the Ukrainian army.

Abbott announced the decision to provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with assistance worth over $2 million.

The leaders also discussed ways to intensify bilateral ties in agriculture.

Abbott highly assessed Poroshenko's visit, which is the first visit to Australia by a Ukrainian president, and reaffirmed the Australian authorities' plans to continue to robustly support Ukraine.

In a few past months, Australia has supported Ukraine morally and has helped it economically, Abbott said.
