Poroshenko vows to listen to opposition in parliament and ideological minority in society

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has promised to listen not only to the opinion of the parliamentary opposition, but also to the views of an ideological minority in society.

"My ideological supporters are, of course, those who formed a coalition. But I'm not the president of the coalition. I'm the president of the whole country and all Ukrainians who voted for me, as well as for those who had another choice. So I also have to listen to the parliamentary opposition," he said in an extraordinary address on Ukraine's internal and external situation at the Verkhovna Rada on Thursday.

At the same time, Poroshenko noted that it was necessary not only to hear the opinion of the opposition in the Verkhovna Rada, but also take into account the presence of an ideological minority in society.

"Many people still glance in the direction of the Customs Union and support the idea of a second official language. I will be frank: we will not give the holders of such thoughts the right to veto geopolitical or civilization decisions by the overwhelming majority whose existence has been confirmed by presidential and parliamentary elections," he added.

In his opinion, reforms on the decentralization of power will help take into account all views in the country.

"The idea of the decentralization of power will give impressive opportunities to take into account local specifics, including in matters of faith, historical memory, language, religion, and ethnic traditions. We should respect all of these manifestations," he said.
