Poroshenko, Merkel condemn plans to hold pseudo-elections in Donbas on November 2

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have condemned the intention to hold pseudo-elections in the self-proclaimed "Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics" on November 2 this year, the presidential press service has reported.

"President Poroshenko and Chancellor Merkel condemned the intention to hold pseudo-elections in the so-called DPR and LPR on November 2, because they are contrary to the Minsk protocol of September 5," the press service reported, citing a phone conversation between Poroshenko and Merkel.

Poroshenko said that all parties to the Minsk protocol and the Minsk memorandum were responsible for their implementation, including Russia, which "confirmed its commitment to these agreements following a multilateral dialogue in Milan on October 17," the report says.

As reported, Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada at its closed meeting on September 16, 2014, passed a presidential law on special self-government procedures in certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions for three years and on snap local elections in these districts on December 7, 2014.

At the same time, the self-proclaimed republics in Luhansk and Donetsk regions announced their plans to hold their own local elections of leaders and legislatures on November 2, 2014.

Poroshenko said the November 2 elections threatened the peace process in Donbas.

Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov earlier announced that Moscow would recognize the results of the November 2 elections in the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics.

"We see it as a top priority of the Minsk agreements. We expect the elections to take place as planned, and we will certainly recognize their results," Lavrov said.
