Avakov: Over 80,000 policemen to provide law and order on Ukrainian elections day

Some 82,000 police officers will provide law and order on the day of the early Verkhovna Rada elections in Ukraine, and more than 60,000 of them will be protecting polling stations, Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said.

"In all, 82,000 police officers will be protecting the public peace during the election process, and 61,000 of them will be guarding elections documents and the election process as such," he said at a meeting attended by Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk and international and Ukrainian observers in Kyiv on Thursday.

According to the minister, another 18,000 policemen will be protecting the public peace directly on the streets and another 4,000 will form rapid reaction groups to be deployed in the areas "facing a threat of terrorist acts or aggressive behavior by certain candidates."

As of today, 227 criminal inquiries relating to the election process have been opened, Avakov said. Most violations were recorded in the Odesa, Kyiv, Chernihiv and Kharkiv regions. All participants in the election process were involved in such violations one way or another, he said.

"All violations are being recorded and, hopefully, in a rather impartial way," the interior minister said.

Early parliamentary elections will take place in Ukraine on October 26.
