Parliamentary elections in Donbas possible only on Ukrainian army controlled territories – Turchynov

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Oleksandr Turchynov has said that parliamentary elections in Donetsk and Luhansk regions will be held only in the regions that are under the control of Ukrainian troops.

"Speaking about elections on the territory on which the anti-terrorist operation is being conducted. I believe that the elections really can be held only in those regions and districts that today are under the control of the Ukrainian authorities and Ukrainian troops, where we can protect the rights of our citizens to the free expression of their will," he said at a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday.

The chairman said that elections can't be carried on the territory that is under the control of the militants.

"I'm sure that while they [the territories] are occupied, elections are impossible there. It would be a farce, [there would be] falsification, an attempt to legalize terrorists in order to discredit the election process itself," the spokesman said.

Early parliamentary elections in Ukraine are scheduled for October 26.
