Kyiv, Washington sign arms trade deal – Ukrainian foreign ministry

Ukraine and the Unites States on Tuesday, in the frames of the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly, signed an agreement on the armaments trade, a press service of Ukraine's Foreign Ministry reported.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin took part in the ceremony.

This multilateral agreement was approved by the UN General Assembly on April 2, 2013 and was opened for the signing on June 3, 2014.

The agreement is mainly meant for the introduction on the international level of high standards in the arms trade and reduction of the risks of occurrence of the weapon into the illegal turnover.

The ministry stressed that a laborious task of the delegations of all UN member states and a long process of negotiations in the frames of UN General Assembly preceded signing of a deal.

"Ukraine gradually supported an indicated process and after signing of the agreement, confirmed it is aiming to streamline the international armaments trade, in particular, through improving the systems of export control of member states," the ministry said.
