Ukraine submits film The Guide for Oscar nomination

Kyiv will submit Ukrainian film The Guide, or Flowers Have Eyes by director Oles Sanin for the Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

"The Ukrainian Oscar Committee established under the Producers Association of Ukraine, on September 9 chose film The Guide, or Flowers Have Eyes directed by Oles Sanin to represent Ukraine in 2014 as the contender for the nomination of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the category Best Foreign Language Film," the Ukrainian Oscar Committee said in a press release.

The movie tells a story of a blind Kobzar (Ukrainian folk minstrel) and an American ten-year-old boy amidst the turbulent mid-30s Soviet Ukraine.

Every country is invited to submit what it considers its best film to the Academy. After each country has designated its official entry, English-subtitled copies of all submitted films are shipped to the Academy, where they are screened by the Foreign Language Film Award Committee, whose members select by secret ballot the five official nominations.

The 87th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), is scheduled to take place on February 22, 2015.
