EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice President Catherine Ashton, who took part in a meeting between the leaders of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine in Minsk, has called for a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, appropriate management of the Russian-Ukrainian border, and the delivery of humanitarian aid in compliance with international law.

"We called for a ceasefire, linked to the proper management of borders," Ashton said in Minsk on Tuesday. She also underscored "the importance of insuring that humanitarian support reached people in a proper manner, in full line with international law."

Ashton also spoke in favor of supporting a political process aimed at solving internal disagreements in Ukraine.

Speaking at a press conference in Minsk, Ashton said the multilateral talks were positive, as their purpose was to prompt the parties to do all they can to resolve the Ukraine crisis.

The meeting was focused on two discussions, the first one concerning economic matters, including energy, and the second problems of peace and security, Ashton said, adding that she viewed the second discussion as the most important one.
