Poroshenko says Merkel is Ukraine's good friend and strong advocate

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has thanked German Chancellor Angela Merkel for support of the Ukrainian people and stressed that they spoke for 20 times over the past two months.

"Poroshenko said that Merkel is a good friend and strong advocate of Ukraine. Over the past two months they communicated for over 20 times, and it had significantly helped Ukraine protect its interests," reads a statement of the presidential press service issued after a meeting of Poroshenko and Merkel in Kyiv on Saturday.

The president at the beginning of the meeting said that it is symbolic that the visit of the German chancellor is made on the day of the Ukrainian Flag Day and before the Independence Day. Poroshenko also said that now Ukraine is united as ever and the country is going through a very tragic test in its history. He said that according to recent data, the level of support of independence by the citizens is even higher than in 1991 when the country became independent.

The head of state expressed gratitude to German people for support of Ukrainian people in their eagerness to peace and democracy.

In turn, Merkel said that she plans to discuss Germany's support to Ukraine in the difficult times for the country and "the way to peace that Ukraine has to go through." The chancellor expressed gratitude to the President for a warm welcome.
