Poroshenko signs law on preventive detention in conflict zone

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed the law introducing amendments to the law of Ukraine on combating terrorism regarding the preventive detention in the area of the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) of individuals involved in terrorist activities, for a period exceeding 72 hours, the press service of the head of state has reported.

According to the document, in order to prevent terrorist threats in the area of the anti-terrorist operation it is possible to conduct the preventive detention of persons involved in terrorist activities, for a period exceeding three days. The deadline for preventive detention cannot exceed 30 days. The ground for preventive detention is the presence of a reasonable suspicion that a person was engaged in terrorist activity.

Preventive detention is carried out under a motivated decision of the chief of the main office of the Security Service of Ukraine or the chief of the main office of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, in a relevant region, the cities of Kyiv and Sevastopol, with the consent of the prosecutor and without an order of the investigating judge.
