Referendum could be held simultaneously with second round of presidential elections - Sobolev

An all-Ukrainian referendum could be held during the second round of presidential elections when there is the necessary legal framework for its holding, acting Batkivschyna faction leader Serhiy Sobolev has said.

"We need a legal framework. As of today a referendum can be announced only by the president, not the acting president. Therefore we need to change the law, and, by the way, the proposal that was made yesterday [at a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council] was supported by everyone. This should to be a law, which will be in effect exclusively for such a referendum, i.e. this is the law with a single action," he said at a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday.

Sobolev said that "this law has a chance to be adopted, and thus the date of the referendum could be the second round of the presidential election - June 15, in order to legitimize this process, prepare for this process."

He also said that representatives of all parliamentary factions should agree on issues to be put to the referendum.

"Our proposal is the following: are you in favor of a single unitary country with the extension of the powers of local government? This will actually be a plan for the work of the constitutional commission and a task that then, during the second stage, will be put to the vote in parliament, when more than 300 votes will have to be collected," Sobolev said.
