US warns Russia of new sanctions if it fails to comply with Geneva agreement

Russia will face consequences if the country does not comply with the Geneva agreement reached earlier on Ukraine, the spokesperson for the United States Department of State, Jen Psaki, said on April 18.

"We will see if they do take steps this time, and if they don’t take steps there will be consequences. But I’m not going to put a date on that. We won’t know for a couple of days," she said at a briefing in Washington.

"There’s a range that are not yet sanctioned, but certainly we continue to look at. We have the ability through the executive order to also put in place sectoral sanctions, but it hasn’t changed that we’re not leading with the sanctioning of the leader of a country," she said.

"There are dozens of individuals who have played unhelpful roles who we could certainly sanction if warranted," she said.

President Barack Obama's national security advisor, Susan E. Rice, said at a briefing in Washingotn that the United States will see over the coming days whether Russia upholds its agreement reached in Geneva on the crisis in Ukraine.

Rice confirmed that the United States is ready to impose additional sanctions against Russia if Moscow fails to meet its obligations taken in Geneva.
