Only official representatives of states should attend four-way talks on Ukraine – statement

The Verkhovna Rada has ordered the Foreign Ministry to familiarize the international community with the position of the Ukrainian parliament regarding the initiative of international talks on de-escalation of the situation around the country.

A total of 232 MPs voted for a respective draft resolution on Wednesday, an Interfax-Ukraine reporter said.

According to the text of the declaration, the Ukrainian parliament believes that talks between officials of Ukraine, Russia, the United States and the EU should be aimed at de-escalating the situation, eliminating the threat of Russia's military incursion into the mainland Ukraine, as well as pulling back the Russian Armed Forces from Ukraine's border and withdrawing Russian troops from Crimea.

In addition, the parliament is convinced that these talks should be aimed at "Russia's rejecting the propaganda campaign that distorts the facts, spreads blatant lies and seeks to justify Russian aggression."

The Verkhovna Rada also said that four-party talks should be directed to facilitate the return of Russia to the field of relations of international law, Russia's refusal from "the policy of revenge and blackmail, in particular military, economic, and energy."

However, the statement notes that Ukraine will be representatives at negotiations by a single official plenipotentiary delegation, which should be guided by this statement and act in accordance with approved guidelines.
