Opposition prepares draft of new constitution, proposes putting it to vote - Yatseniuk

Batkivschyna parliamentary faction leader Arseniy Yatseniuk has said that the opposition has prepared a draft of a new Constitution of Ukraine and proposed putting it to the vote.

"Our position remains unchanged: a draft constitution is ready... The country should switch to a parliamentary-presidential republic... Let's put the draft constitution to the vote," he said during a morning plenary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada in Kyiv on Thursday.

Yatseniuk said that the opposition had prepared "a draft of a new constitution, which clearly meets the demands of the Ukrainian people and the Venice Commission."

He said that according to the proposed amendments, Ukraine returns to a parliamentary-presidential republic: the Verkhovna Rada appoints all members of the Cabinet of Ministers, the prosecutor general, and acts as a legislative body on behalf of the Ukrainian people.

Yatseniuk also said that several thousand people were currently moving to the building of the Verkhovna Rada to demand that the Ukrainian parliament return to the 2004 Constitution.

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Rybak, in turn, said that no bills concerning constitutional amendments had currently been registered in parliament.
