Kozhara: Involving foreign arbitrators to settle crisis in Ukraine is extreme measure

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara has said that the principal way to resolve the political situation in the country should be negotiations between all sides of the conflict, whereas the involvement of foreign mediators would be an extreme measure.

"I think that this is an extreme measure, which would show the inability of the government and the opposition to hold constructive talks. And if this happens, then we can certainly use the services of some very influential intermediaries," the foreign minister said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.

The foreign minister said he supported the authorities' proposal to sit down at the negotiating table, formulate their agenda and start discussing the most pressing issues.

The minister also said that Ukraine had already received proposals from well-known European politicians to mediate in resolving the situation within the country. In particular, the secretary general of the Council of Europe had voiced such an idea, the EU is making similar proposals, Kozhara said.

Earlier on Thursday, leader of the UDAR party Vitaliy Klitschko has said that representatives of the Ukrainian community and the European Union should take part in a dialogue to resolve the crisis in Ukraine.
