In light of a number of incidents and clashes at the Independence Square in Kyiv, where Ukrainian opposition groups were protesting the Ukrainian government's decision not to sign the Association Agreement with the EU at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius, a decision was made to oust the people from Kyiv's main square, the city police department has told Interfax-Ukraine.

Following incidents that took place late on Friday, there were also some clashes with workers from city utility services, it said.

The city police department said in a later statement that 35 people had been detained for resistance to police and disorderly conduct during the dispersal operation.

During the dispersal operation, "the demonstrators pelted police officers with firecrackers and stones and damaged a police bus," it said.

"Thirty-five people have been detained for resistance to police and disorderly conduct. Administrative reports are being drawn up on them. Most of these people have already been released," the city police department said.
