Over 20,000 people sign initiative to impose sanctions against Yanukovych on White House Web site

A petition to impose sanctions on Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has been signed by more than 20,000 people.

The petition was posted on the Web site of the White House.

"We demand that personal sanctions be imposed on Yanukovych and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine members unless Yanukovych signs the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement during Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius, Lithuania on November 29, 2013," reads a posting on the Web site.

A total of 24,021 people have signed the petition as of 1800 on November 27, while the initiators want to reach the goal of 100,000 signatures by December 26, 2013.

"We cannot accept the fact that President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and his government deny the right of the people of Ukraine to draw closer to Western civilization," reads the petition.

According to the petition, the sanctions should include but not be limited to "a ban on entry to the United States and the EU for Yanukovych and Ukraine government members' families."

In addition, the authors of the petition said that banks accounts of companies affiliated with Yanukovych and Ukrainian government members should be frozen.
