Ukraine should demand from the Russian Federation an apology and compensation for the organization of the Holodomor (man-made famine) of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, Leader of the Svoboda faction Oleh Tiahnybok said ahead of the 80th anniversary of the Holodomor.

"I suggest criminalizing public denial of the Holodomor as the genocide of the Ukrainian nation and we should demand from Russia an official apology and a compensation for the genocide of the Ukrainian nation in 1932-1933," he said during the morning session of the Verkhovna Rada on Tuesday.

As reported, on November 26, 1998, the second President of Ukraine (1995-2005) Leonid Kuchma issued a decree establishing the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Holodomor and political repressions, which is observed annually on the fourth Saturday of November.

Ukraine experienced three famines throughout the twentieth century: in 1921-1923, 1932-1933, 1946-1947, the second one being the largest and the deadliest one. According to various estimates, from five to nine million people died from malnutrition in Ukraine in 1932-1933.
