Source: Economic courts to be disbanded in Ukraine

The decision to disband all economic courts in Ukraine will soon be made as part of judicial reform, a senior source in Ukraine's presidential administration has said.

"We've been preparing such a project for a long time. The decision to transfer the functions of economic courts to the courts of general jurisdiction will be made in the near future. Similar reform was recently launched in Russia. And we are observing its implementation with interest," the source said on Friday.

He also said that the elimination of economic courts should lead to a reduction in the level of corruption.

"It's no secret that economic courts have recently become the epicenter of corruption and cast a shadow over the entire judicial system, which started operating more effectively after the reform," the source said.

"We see more acquittals and, in general, more decisions aimed at restoring the rights of citizens. However, economic courts don't give people an opportunity to experience the effects of reforms, are hindering the reforms, cast a shadow over all power in general, and therefore they must be destroyed."

The network of economic courts includes local economic courts (regional courts, courts of Kyiv, Sevastopol and Crimea), seven economic courts of appeal, as well as the Higher Economic Court of Ukraine.
