Ukrainian Foreign Minister objects to putting off signing of Association Agreement with EU

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara has said he objects to a proposal to postpone the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU for a year, which was recently put forward by entrepreneurs at a meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

"I think that if we postpone it, we'll never become prepared," he said at a press briefing in Kyiv on Thursday.

The minister stressed that the Association Agreement envisages a range of specific measures and reforms for Ukrainian manufacturers.

"Moreover, if by that time Ukraine actively implements general reforms, then after the signing of the Association Agreement we will implement reforms of European standard, as there is no sense in the implementation of European rules in Ukraine without this agreement. This has sense when there is strong political cooperation, political connection with the EU," Kozhara said.

On November 12, Ukrainian MP Valentyn Landik proposed that Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych postpone the signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union for one year.

At a meeting between Yanukovych and representatives of the Ukrainian League of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine on Tuesday, Landik highlighted problems related to goods exports to the Customs Union member states, the presidential press service said.
