Giorgi Margvelashvili, who has won the presidential elections in Georgia, has told the public there will be no political persecution of his opponents.

"The president does not have the powers of a prosecutor. I can say that there will be no political persecution in Georgia, and I will be a moral and political guarantor of that," Margvelashvili told a press conference given jointly by Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili on Monday responding to a question about the possibility of political persecution of Mikheil Saakashvili.

"As to criminal prosecution, these issues are outside my powers. Law-governed states are the foundation of the United States and Europe and it's the foundation of our statehood," Margvelashvili said.

Representatives of the new Georgian administration have said more than once that Saakashvili could be prosecuted.
