Parliament sets January 17, 2010 as presidential election date
The Ukrainian parliament has set January 17, 2010 as the date of the next presidential election in Ukraine.
The bill was supported by 399 MPs out of 442 registered in parliament on Tuesday.
Parliament also instructed the Parliamentary Committee on State Building and Local Government to prepare a bill amending law on presidential elections to stipulate decreasing the campaign term from 120 to 90 days.
The committee is to submit this bill on the last plenary week of June 2009.
The parliament also instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to take measures on the funding and functioning of the state register of voters by the time the election campaign begins. The Central Election Commission was instructed to update the information in the register.
