WikiLeaks says former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden had not yet formally accepted Venezuela's offer of political asylum.

It was reported earlier that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro had offered asylum to Snowden. Maduro's offer followed Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega's statement to the effect that his country could offer asylum to Snowden.

Snowden fled to Hong Kong in May 2013, after which he spilled information on U.S. secret Internet surveillance operations.

Snowden has asked for asylum in a number of countries. The U.S. is seeking his extradition.

Snowden is currently in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport and cannot fly anywhere as long as the U.S. has revoked his passport.
