Yanukovych assures Barroso new model of Ukraine's cooperation with EEC does not contradict EU integration course

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has assured European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso that the signing of a memorandum on deepening cooperation between Ukraine and the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) and the further format of interaction with the Eurasian Economic Union does not contradict the country's European integration course.

Yanukovych told this to Barroso during a phone conversation on May 31, the press service of the Ukrainian president reported on Saturday.

"Viktor Yanukovych briefed Jose Manuel Barroso on the agreements signed to deepen cooperation between Ukraine and the Eurasian Economic Commission. He assured [Barroso] that this new model of cooperation between Ukraine and the Eurasian Economic Union does not contradict Ukraine's membership of the WTO and its strategic course towards European integration through the signing of the Association Agreement and the creation of a deep and comprehensive free trade area with the EU," reads the statement.

The presidents also discussed the prospects for signing the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in November 2013 and Ukraine's progress in meeting the relevant criteria.

Barroso also thanked Yanukovych for the explanations provided.

The sides agreed to maintain an active and open dialog on all issues of mutual interest.

As reported, on May 31 in Minsk, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and Chairman of the Eurasian Economic Commission's Board Viktor Khristenko signed a memorandum on deepening cooperation between Ukraine and the Eurasian Economic Commission.

The memorandum envisages Ukraine's participation in the work of the Eurasian Economic Commission and its bodies.
