CEC head: Accusations against CEC of sabotaging preparations for referendum on Ukraine's accession to Customs Union improper

Claims that Central Election Commission is sabotaging preparations for an all-Ukrainian referendum on Ukraine's accession to the Customs Union, made by Ukrainian Communist Party leader Petro Symonenko, are political PR, Head of the Central Election Commission Volodymyr Shapoval has said.

"I'm confident that such a statement is political PR, and, obviously, it's directed at the domestic and foreign markets. It's clear that the domestic market is those citizens who vote for PR people, and I would not like to talk about the foreign market, as everything is clear," he said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

"If we speak emotionally, I believe that such a statement is improper. I will explain why. In fact, under the quota two CEC members are from the Communist Party. I'm sure that MP Symonenko has contact with them, and he could very easily establish the actual state of affairs. Such a statement can be seen as a manifestation of the consumer and therefore a dishonest attitude towards his delegates in the CEC," he said.

"By the way, this is the second such statement by MP Symonenko. In fact, I should not have reacted to all of this, because it's politicking, rather than politics. I'll give the same answer to those who believe that the CEC, as if pleasing the authorities, is too quickly taking respective documentary decisions," Shapoval said.
