Tomenko ready to run for Kyiv mayor if opposition nominates him

Batkivschyna parliamentary faction MP Mykola Tomenko has said that he is ready to be the joint candidate for Kyiv mayor of the opposition if the Batkivschyna, UDAR and Svoboda factions nominate him.

"My name was considered several months ago. I have a certain rating and support as a single candidate from the opposition. If the party and my colleagues from Svoboda and UDAR support me, I am ready to justify their confidence," he said on Radio Liberty radio station.

Tomenko added that a candidate should be selected via a sociology poll of the list of possible candidates.

Tomenko said he was surprised by reports that the opposition could nominate independent MP Petro Poroshenko for Kyiv mayor.

"Because if one came from Azarov-led government and in your parliamentary activity as and independent MP one supports Yanukovych and Azarov in important issues, then one cannot count oneself among the opposition," Tomeko said.

He added that the opposition should stop discussions on a single candidate for Kyiv mayor for a while.

Tomenko also said that the elections for mayor and deputies of Kyiv City Council should be held on the same day.

"The election of the city mayor without electing Kyiv City Council has no sense in August, when 30% of Kyiv residents will be away from the city. We should fight and hold the elections of Kyiv City Council and mayor in September, instead of obeying the authorities' scenario," he said.

The MP also expressed hope that three oppositional factions would avoid infighting because of the elections in Kyiv.
