Lutsenko brought to Kyiv to court hearing of his appeal

Former interior minister of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko has been brought from Mena penal colony, where he serves his sentence for abuse of office, to the Higher Specialized Court of Ukraine for Civil and Criminal Cases, which will consider his appeal.

Lutsenko was placed in a glass box in the courtroom, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported.

Journalists were not allowed into the courtroom. Representatives of the media will be watching live video broadcast of the trial from the courtroom in a separate room.

As reported, on April 2, the Higher Specialized Court of Ukraine for Civil and Criminal Cases will consider Lutsenko's cassation appeal against the sentence by Kyiv Pechersky District Court, which was subsequently upheld by an appellate court.

On February 27, 2012, Kyiv Pechersky District Court found Lutsenko guilty of several crimes and sentenced him to four years in prison. Kyiv Court of Appeals upheld that sentence.

On August 17, 2012, Pechersky District Court found Lutsenko guilty of negligence in the extension of operational search activities on Valentyn Davydenko, who worked as a driver for Volodymyr Satsiuk, former deputy head of the Ukrainian Security Service, and sentenced him to two years of restriction of freedom.

Lutsenko was detained on December 25, 2010. He was arrested under a court ruling several days later.

The former interior minister has been serving his sentence for several crimes in the Mena colony, Chernihiv region, since late August 2012.
