Fire at Vuhlehirska thermal power plant in Donetsk region put out, says Emergency Situations Service

The fire at Vuhlehirska Thermal Power Plant operated by Public Joint Stock Company Centrenergo (Svitlodarsk, Donetsk region) was put out early on Saturday, the press service of the State Emergency Situations Service of Ukraine reported.

According to the service, the blaze was extinguished at 0540 on Saturday. Its cause is being established.

One person was killed in the fire and five people were hospitalized with burns and poisoning with combustion products, the agency said. Firemen and rescuers evacuated ten people from the power plant.

The fire partially damaged the equipment and the roof of the building. The heat supply has been temporarily halted to Svitlodarsk (home to more than 12,000 people). Electricity supplies have been cut to Novoluhanske sewage treatment complex which is currently powered by a mobile power station of the State Emergency Situations Service of Ukraine.

The fire totally destroyed four of the power plant's seven power units. The blaze reportedly started from the ignition of coal dust in the second unit of Vuhlehirska TPP at 1515 on Friday, and then spread to the roof of the building.

The plant's operation has been suspended.
