Ukraine's gross foreign debt grows by 2.06% in Q3, 2017

Ukraine's gross foreign debt amounted to $117.35 billion as of early October 2017, or 2.06% more than at the beginning of July 2017, according to the website of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

In general, the country's gross external debt has increased by 3.27% since the beginning of the year.

According to the central bank, public debt rose by 4% in July-September 2017, to $38.962 billion, whereas NBU liabilities shrank by 0.24%, to $7.564 billion. Since the beginning of the year, these figures have reached 6.76% and 21.18% respectively. Government debt and NBU liabilities are represented exclusively by long-term borrowings.

Liabilities in other sectors during the reporting period grew by 1.66%, to $54.989 billion, and direct investment liabilities rose by 2.79%, to $9.32 billion. These figures have grown by was 3.13% and 8.22% respectively since the beginning of the year.

Depositary corporations reduced the debt by 3.94%, to $6.513 billion. The decrease since the beginning of the year reached 27.36%.

The lion's share of gross external debt is represented in U.S. dollars - 71.5%. Some 12.4% are liabilities in euros and 12.3% in special drawing rights (SDRs).

The NBU also specified that the country's net gross external debt as of early October 2017 was $1.689 billion, whereas net gross external assets as of early July 2017 reached $583 million.

As reported, overall direct government-guaranteed debt in Ukraine in October 2017 fell by 0.97%, or $750 million, to $76.29 billion. In the national currency the state debt grew by 0.18% or UAH 3.75 billion, to UAH 2.047 trillion.

Since early 2017, overall direct government-guaranteed debt in U.S. dollars grew by 7.49% and in hryvnias – by 6.06%.

The law on the state budget for 2017 sets the upper limit for the state debt as of late 2017 at UAH 1.717 billion and the upper limit for state guaranteed debt at UAH 579.37 billion compared to UAH 1.501 trillion and UAH 444.78 billion as of late 2016 in the law on the 2016 budget.
