MMDS Ukraine to convert frequencies within one or two months to introduce 4G

MMDS Ukraine will convert radio frequencies for the introduction of 4G communications standard in Ukraine within one or two months after a tender to receive he licenses to provide 4G services in the 2,600 MHz range.

Director General of Vega telecom group, which manages MMDS Ukraine, Murat Chinar said on Wednesday that later work on conversion of frequencies would not stop.

"The conversion will be carried out in one to two months after the end of the tender, but it will continue. The first step is the release [of frequencies], then the continuation of the conversion, but this will not prevent the deployment of the network by operators," he said.

According to Chinar, the proceeds from the conversion will be used to modernize and modify the existing infrastructure to release the frequency spectrum.

"This approach is not unique. It was used for 3G, when a conversion was made to release the frequencies used by the military. The question of the specific amount that will be received by MMDS Ukraine is still under discussion," he said.

As for the likely participation of Vega in the 4G tender, the general director said that currently the commercial tactics of the group do not allow answering this question.

Meanwhile, at the end of 2016, Chinar said that the group was considering this opportunity.
