Ukraine-U.S. exercise to respond to mock radiation accident start on Sept 5

Joint Ukrainian-American command and staff exercises to respond to an emergency situation related to a possible radiation accident at Zaporizhia nuclear power plant (NPP) of Energoatom will begin on Tuesday, September 5, and will last for three days.

According to the press service of the State Emergencies Service of Ukraine, during three days participants in the exercise will work out three modules of the scenario for responding to a possible radiation accident at Zaporizhia NPP.

The first module "Response to the accident at the power unit of Zaporizhia NPP at the object, local and regional levels" provides for an overview of the response to the radiation accident at the NPP at such levels.

The second module "Response to the accident at the power unit of Zaporizhia NPP at the state level and priority measures to eliminate its consequences" refers to priority measures at the state level to respond and mitigate the consequences.

The third module "Response to the accident at the power unit of Zaporizhia NPP and long-term measures to eliminate its consequences" provides, inter alia, for consideration of the issues of temporary population resettlement from the emergency zone, decontamination of the territory, buildings, facilities, collection and disposal of radioactive waste, etc.

Based on the results of the exercise, the level of readiness and ability of central and local executive authorities to eliminate the consequences of the accident at the nuclear power plant and their interaction will be determined.
