Ukrenergo initiates uniting strategic companies to resist to cyber attacks

National energy company Ukrenergo plans to initiate uniting companies of pivotal infrastructure (energy, railways, roads and aviation, banking sector, communications, mail) to resist to cyber attacks, Ukrenergo Head Vsevolod Kovalchuk told reporters last week.

"Starting Monday, I will present an initiative to all large public and private enterprises, which activities can be combined under the term 'pivotal infrastructure'... All of these organizations, from my point of view, should be interested in working together on technical recommendations that we can prevent these threats and not when they happened," he said.

According to him, in turn, the state should approve the recommendations made by the real sector through the decisions of the official institutions.

Kovalchuk said that this corresponds to the experience of the association established in the early 2000s in the United States, which was later transformed into an organization with regulatory functions, and most of the companies which operations influence the economy and security of the country are members of the organization.

"I believe that the creation of a non-profit organization, which members and financing parties will be all the major enterprises from the list of 'pivotal infrastructure,' will become an efficient tool that would effectively exchange information, analyze the efficiency of the measures each company applies separately, and draw up recommendations for the implementation of these measures," he said.
