Situation with gas in Ukrainian storage under control but monitoring continues

The European Commission believes that the situation with gas reserves in underground storage facilities in Ukraine is under control, but it will continue to monitor the situation, EC Vice President for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic has told reporters.

Sefcovic met with Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak on Monday.

Novak told reporters that, despite the coming end of the heating season, at this meeting Russia expressed concerns regarding the low level of gas reserves in Ukraine's underground storage facilities.

The EC believes the situation is under control, but it has agreed to remain in touch and be prepared to find a solution if there are any signs of the situation deteriorating, Sefcovic said.

Compared to last winter, a positive factor is that Ukraine has financial resources to buy gas, including from the EBRD, but the EC will monitor the situation so that there are no problems with transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe, Sefcovic said.
