Visa free regime with EU could expand intercity, international transportation by bus by 10-20%

The Ukrainian bus transportation market with the introduction of the visa free regime between Ukraine and the European Union could expand by 10-20%, Director General of Busfor Ukraine Oleksandr Pavlovich has said.

"According to our estimates, if we take 2016 it was around 150 million passenger traffic on intercity and international routes. If the visa free regime is not introduced, the volume would increase by 1-2%, if it is introduced – by 10-20%," he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

He said that the company in 2016 sold around 1 million bus tickets.

He said that in the international transportation segment European destinations are popular, in particular, Poland. Last year passenger traffic to this country tripled.

"There are many carriers with different prices, quality of buses and options of departure from Ukrainian cities for this destination. Poland's share of total sales is around 40%, and the share of the rest of Europe and other countries is smaller, for example, Belarus 5% and Germany 1.2%," he said.

In general, Busfor Ukraine predicts that online bus ticket sales would reach 50% of all bus ticket sales in next three or five years if the quality of transportation improves and if passengers are able to use e-tickets.
