EC has no new elements to report about EU-Ukraine-Russia trilateral gas talks

The European Commission (EC) has no new elements to report on holding the trilateral gas talks between the European Union (EU), Ukraine and Russia, Spokesperson for Specific Energy Union Projects Jakub Adamowicz has said.

"There are no new elements to report from our side that concerns trilateral gas negotiations where we are playing the mediating role. We had our last meeting here in Brussels in December and this is the state of play. So no elements to announce from our side," he said at a briefing in Brussels on January 5.

Journalists tried to receive comments on the interview of Russian Permanent Representative to the EU Vladimir Chizhov with Interfax where he expressed alarm about the state of Russian gas transit to Europe due to low stocks of gas in Ukraine's underground storage facilities.

"Gas is flowing. We are working. There no new elements to report at this stage," he said asked if there is a threat to gas supplies to Europe.

He also deflected comments on the figures Chizhov presented regarding gas stocks, adding that gas storage levels are the public information which is widely available and it is not the European Commission's role to provide commentary on the levels.

Repeatedly asked if 14 billion cubic meters of gas in Ukraine's underground storage facilities is enough to maintain gas transit, he said that what the European Commission does is to provide a framework for good negotiations between the parties in the gas trilateral talks.

"This is all we have to say on this specific topic as of today," he said.
