EBRD not ruling out its participation in PrivatBank privatization

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) under certain conditions may participate in the process of a possible future privatization of PrivatBank, which was nationalized on December 19, EBRD Managing Director for Eastern Europe and the Caucasus Francis Malige has said.

"It is too early to say that it is going to be privatized. But for now it is important that it should be nationalized properly, stabilized, restructured and then privatized after some time. When the decision time comes, of course we would like to support that," he told Interfax-Ukraine.

At present, the EBRD intends to consult the Ukrainian government in the choice of new management for the bank and in other matters, Malige said.

"We are in touch with the government on this matter [the nationalization of PrivatBank]. My understanding of the situation with yesterday's decisions is that the supervisory board has been dismissed at the moment. And so as a result they need to assemble the new team of professional bankers and we happen to know a lot of them. So we have been helping and discussing the names with the government," the EBRD managing director said.
