EC vice president gives Russia verbal guarantee Kyiv won't enforce $6.6 bln fine against Gazprom

European Commission Vice President for energy union Maros Sefcovic has given Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak verbal guarantees that Ukraine will not take any action to enforce a Kyiv court order to impose a $6.6 billion fine on Russian gas giant Gazprom in a lawsuit filed by Ukraine's Antimonopoly Committee, Novak said on TV channel NTV.

"EC Vice President Sefcovic, in the course of trilateral negotiations [between Russia, Ukraine and the EC that were held last Thursday in Brussels] assured [me] that he had talked with the prime minister of Ukraine, who confirmed that Kyiv will take no actions to implement the decision of the Kyiv economic court regarding transported gas," Novak said.

"We see that this statement, that this is essentially verbal guarantees on the part of the European Commission. Nonetheless, legally this issue has not been resolved. It needs to be resolved legally," Novak said.
