Ukrainian president informs EU leaders on plans to cancel round timber exports ban – European Commission president

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko during the negotiations with leaders of the European institutions said that he intends to initiate the cancelation of a moratorium on exports of unprocessed timber (round timber) and this would open the way for the third tranche of EUR 600 million of EU macrofinancial assistance to Ukraine, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker has said.

"I was pleased to hear today that the Ukrainian president intends to put an end to the ban on the export of timber. It was a condition we had put forward… This expectation would be met in the coming weeks as I understood. This would allow us to give our consent to issue the next tranche of EUR 600 million that we promised to Ukraine as our assistance to the country," he said at a joint press conference with President of the European Council Donald Tusk and Poroshenko in Brussels on Thursday.

As reported, on April 9, 2015 the Verkhovna Rada passed a bill banning exports of round timber for 10 years. A ban to exports timber, apart from pine, was introduced on November 1, 2015 and pine – from January 1, 2017.
