Gontareva slams smear campaign against her, insists on economic stability in Ukraine

Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Valeriya Gontareva has reiterated that a smear campaign is under way against her and says that Ukraine is now seeing macro-financial stability.

"All these are links in one planned chain of provocations. It started before I arrived at [a meeting with] the IMF. I was leading the official delegation. The National Bank has already submitted all the papers to the police. They were disseminating a kind of a pamphlet - you cannot describe it the other way. It was a collection, on the one hand, of innuendoes and utterly false information gathered from various "yellow" websites, and [on the other hand] it was a compilation of why Gontareva is a threat to the country's economic stability, [with] extremely doubtful and unprofessional reports," she said on Channel ICTV on Sunday evening.

According to Gontareva, delayed repayments of refinancing as of today total UAH 74 billion, including UAH 44 billion deposited with non-performing banks, and these banks had been refinanced before she became the NBU's head.

"When I came to the NBU, refinancing debts were estimated at UAH 104 billion. During my tenure, the NBU recovered UAH 37 billion from the market, including UAH 25.9 billion in 2016 alone," she said.

Gontareva said that UAH 84.9 billion had been allocated for bank refinancing during Batkivschyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko's premiership, when the forex rate was UAH 5 per U.S. dollar (nowadays it is about UAH 25.6 per U.S. dollar). She also mentioned that UAH 25 billion at a forex rate of UAH 5 per U.S. dollar had been funneled into Rodovid and Bank Kyiv, plus "refinancing which has melted at those banks."

The chief banker points to macro-financial stability in the country, and says that bank deposits have grown by 7%, or by UAH 12 billion, since the beginning of the year. "Therefore there are no problems either with macro-financing stability, where the situation is absolutely predictable in the country, or with our balance of payments, our current account, our reserves, which cover more than four months of imports. And we're planning to beef them up in future. [There is also stability] on the forex market, where the NBU has already bought UAH 1.4 billion from households this year alone," she said.

Gontareva says she is sure that the campaign against her was masterminded by unfair owners of banks involved with litigation.
