Investigation in Odesa Port-Side Chemical Plant case has no adverse effect on plant's privatization

Director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) Artem Sytnyk has said that the issue of influence of the criminal case against top managers of Odesa Port-Side Chemical Plant (OCPC) on the privatization of the enterprise is speculative.

He is convinced that the investigation into corruption crimes is a precondition for improving investment climate in the country, he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

Sytnyk recalled that after the court decision to arrest Board Chairman of the plant and Deputy Board Chairman of Naftogaz Ukrainy Serhiy Pereloma and First Deputy Board Chairman of the plant Mykola Schurykov one of the largest parliamentary factions claimed that the case was ordered with the purpose of frustrating the privatization of the plant.

"The lawmakers of the faction tried to press on court during the bail hearing, they tried to provoke a conflict with representatives of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office," he said.

Sytnyk said that despite speculations around the privatization of the Odesa plant, removing corruption and solving corruption crimes in Ukraine is one of the key preconditions for improving investment climate and attractiveness of state-owned companies.

He said that no serious investor will send money in the company around which corruption scandals continue unabated.

"The investigation of NABU shows the seriousness of Ukraine's plans to resist to corruption and take real steps on the way to the transparent international business to foreign partners," he said.
