Ukrainian gas inventories increase by 300 mcm since end of 2015/2016 heating season

The volume of gas in Ukraine's underground storage facilities increased by 282.05 million cubic meters (mcm) to 8.720 billion cubic meters (bcm) as of May 2, up from 8.438 bcm as of April 6, 2016 and 2.5% more than the total of 8.505 bcm on May 2, 2015, according to Ukrtransgaz data.

Ukraine was injecting gas into underground storage at a rate of 16.03 mcm a day on May 2, 2016, compared with 39.86 mcm a day on May 2, 2015.

In the late April-early May period this year, Ukraine's gas storage facilities have operated in mixed mode, alternately injecting and withdrawing gas.

Ukraine imported 3.01 mcm of gas from Europe on May 2, 2016, including 1.936 mcm from Slovakia, 1.074 mcm from Hungary and nil from Poland since May 1. Gas imports from Russia halted on November 26 last year.

It was reported earlier that Ukraine began withdrawing gas from underground storage to meet increased consumption during the 2015/2016 heating season on October 30, 2015, when the volume in storage totaled 17.064 bcm, and ended them on April 6, 2016, when inventories totaled 8.447 bcm.

Ukraine began withdrawing gas in the 2014/2015 heating season on October 20, 2014, when the total volume in storage was 16.750 bcm. Its last withdrawal was on April 10, 2015, when volumes totaled 7.609 bcm.

Ukrtransgaz, a 100% subsidiary of Naftogaz Ukrainy, operates Ukraine's trunk gas pipeline system, as well as its 12 underground storage facilities, which have capacity for 31 bcm.
