NBU confident in constitutionality of law on deposit guarantee system

The law of Ukraine on the deposit guarantee system is fully consistent with the Constitution of Ukraine; it's adoption provided better conditions of payments and the implementation of Ukraine's international obligations in the framework of cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the program of adapting Ukrainian legislation to the European Union, Head of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Valeriya Gontareva has said.

According to the regulator's official page on Facebook, the NBU head said this as a member of a meeting of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine on April 26, which on that day started considering the case on the constitutionality of the law of Ukraine on the of individuals' deposit guarantee system dated February 23, 2012 with changes.

"The NBU's position is clear: the law does not contain provisions that would be contrary to the Constitution of Ukraine," Gontareva said, stressing that the recognition of the law unconstitutional will destroy the deposit guarantee system and lead to an avalanche outflow of deposits from banks in connection with a lack of depositors' protection.

According to the press service of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, the case is considered at the request of the Supreme Court of Ukraine with an appeal to examine the constitutionality of the mentioned act.
