Ukraine plans to completely stop using Russian gas within 10 years - Yatseniuk

Ukraine plans to completely stop using Russian gas within 10 years, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk has said.

"In 10 years we will stop buying Russian natural gas," he said in an interview on the "Prime-Time with Myroslava Gongadze" TV program on TV Channel "UA: First" on Thursday.

Yatseniuk said that Ukraine has almost shed itself of its 100% dependence on gas supplies from Russia and two years ago the country started reverse gas supplies from the European Union (EU). Russia's share of gas supplies to Ukraine fell to some 30%.

Additionally, the Ukrainian government has started revising the existing contract base with Russia.

"We've filed two claims to the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce against the Russian gas monopolist. We want to receive $16 billion from Russia as we believe that Russia set the unfair price of gas for Ukraine, and Russia does not pay enough for gas transit via Ukraine's territory," he said.

He also said that Ukraine raised the issue of preventing the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to the EU. This pipeline would deprive Ukraine of transit opportunities and $2 billion a year.
