Holtec to hand over waste nuclear fuel container production technologies to Turboatom

National Nuclear Generating Company Energoatom, JSC Turboatom and Holtec International (the United States) have signed a memorandum of cooperation as part of the project on constructing a centralized waste nuclear fuel storage facility for Ukrainian nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Brussels on Wednesday.

The press service of Energoatom reported that the memorandum states that Holtec's HI-STORM waste nuclear fuel container production technology will be handed over to Turboatom.

The projected cost of Turboatom's services could reach $200 million in the next 10 years, including $60 million for equipment for the centralized waste nuclear fuel storage facility project. Holtec and Turboatom plan to sign a commercial contract on the project by January 2016.

Holtec CEO Chris Singh said that 10 years ago, when the company signed a contract with Energoatom, it set itself the goal of making production of all equipment used in the centralized waste nuclear fuel storage facility as local as possible. Turboatom will not only be able to learn how to produce this equipment, but the company will also be able to export it.

Turboatom Director General Viktor Subotin said confidently that Holtec solutions will be quickly introduced by the enterprise which will increase the competitveness of Ukrainian engineers on the global market and will increase the energy security of Ukraine.

Energoatom President Yuriy Nedashkovsky said that cooperation under the memo would be an important stage in the realization of Energoatom's program on replacing imported goods and it would accelerate construction of the centralized waste nuclear fuel storage facility.

As reported, Energoatom and Holtec International signed an agreement on the construction of the centralized waste nuclear fuel storage facility in 2005.
