Ukraine's air traffic management fully in line with European system - UkSATSE

The organization of Ukraine's air traffic management is fully in line with the requirements of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and EUROCONTROL, Head of Ukrainian State Air Traffic Services Enterprise (UkSATSE) Dmytro Babeichuk has said.

"All planning of air traffic and its use is agreed with the European planning system. Gradually Ukraine was closing airspace, it was a necessity, and the Defense Ministry made the decision to close airspace to flight level 260, which is around 7,900 meters, but for additional safety the State Aviation Service and UkSATSE introduced restrictions for 9,750 meters," he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Tuesday devoted to the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash in the summer of 2014.

He said that then it was impossible to imagine that a Buk surface-to-air missile system would be used against a civilian plane.

"After receiving information on the disappearance of the plane on the radar and the plane's emergency locator beacon detection which was the sign of the crash, the airspace was urgently closed," Babeichuk added.
