Ukraine to insist on revision of transit contract with Gazprom - Prodan

Ukraine considers it necessary to revise its transit contracts with Russia's Gazprom, because they do not comply with European legislation and the requirements of the Energy Community, Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Prodan has said.

"The transit contract that we have today is not in line with European legislation," he told reporters in Brussels on Friday.

He noted that it was planned to create a special expert group as part of trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the European Commission on the resumption of gas supplies.

"A respective expert group of representatives of the European Commission, Gazprom and is to be created, and this group will make conclusions with regard to the transit contract and Gazprom's contracts with European gas transport system operators," Prodan said.

He noted that preliminary estimates of contracts with Gazprom had already been made during the launch of reverse gas supplies from Slovakia and under these estimates, the contracts do not comply with current European legislation.

At the same time, he noted that the transit contract was unlikely to be revised until the resumption of gas supplies, although he said that the Ukrainian side would like to agree on this issue now.

"We would like the parties that take part in it, of course, first and foremost, Gazprom, to agree on this," Prodan said.
